Photographer sues blogger Perez Hilton for $2.1 million for using his photos without permission
New York Times photographer Robert Caplin has sued famous blogger Perez Hilton (Mario Armando Lavandeira, Jr.) for using his photos without his consent. The blogger used 14 photographs of Glee actor Darren Criss on his blog without permission. The photos were owned by Caplin and were originally published in a NYT story.

Hilton not just copied the photos but he also applied his own watermark on the photos claiming them his own! When Caplin contacted the blogger, he apologized and agreed to take down the photographs but didn't. So that's when he decided to sue Hilton. Caplin is asking for $150,000 per image for each of the 14 images the blogger used, so $2,100,000 in total.

What is interesting is Robert Caplin's website has measures in place to prevent people from downloading images so in order to circumvent that Hilton just took screen shots of the photos. Something that we have been saying all along on this blog - if the photos are out there someone will copy them! So you better protect your photos with a watermark.
